“Tell me and I’ll forget. Show me, and I may not remember. Involve me, and I’ll understand.”~Native American proverb
While we were taught how to build sweat lodges and pow wow drums by an Assiniboine medicine man, and the idea of medicine bags comes from many of North America's native people, we do not try to recreate any of the ceremonies here. Those belong to the tribes that have have used them for hundreds of years and we do not feel comfortable "copying" them. The ideas behind them, however, are a celebration of life, thanksgiving, and reverence for other living things. And we believe that those truths should be universal and we want to share them with you.
For kids (or for the kid in all of us), we can also teach you how to make drums out of rawhide for a chance to create your own music. We were taught how to make a powwow drum by an Assiniboine medicine man (and have one we can show you), but have simplified the process so that kids can make their own.
Traditionally, a medicine bag is an item that spiritually represents the one wearing it. Here at Bison Quest, we have all of the materials for any who wish to make one of the small leather pouches and fill them with mementos (bison wool, sage leaves, sweetgrass, etc) that capture the essence of your time here.
